Absolutely mindboggling. Can't the Republican establishment slow the death spiral? Maybe they're too lame or too timid to speak out. The Party is dangerously close to becoming a non-factor in national politics.

You raise a good question: Who is responsible for the US ranking so poorly in educational achievement? Is it the teachers? The administrators? The parents? Various studies have shown that one of the best predictors of student success is the number of books in the family home.

One of the great things about free speech is that it gives us the right to make fools of ourselves. The fact is: most of the monies from most state lotteries do flow to the schools.

The blame for teacher layoffs lies with the affected localities and the public at large, not with the Federal government. School budgets are largely financed by local property taxes. Teacher layoffs are the direct result of local revenue shortfalls stemming from declining property tax asessments.
